Destination Coffee

Transat Jacques Vabre 2007

Heading straight for Brazil!

In the beginning, it was all a question of coffee... The course was drawn up back in 1993 to follow in the wake of the clippers transporting the famous grounds. This maritime adventure now sees the greatest yachtsmen taking part... The Transat Jacques Vabre is a major date on the calendar, taking place every other year on odd years...

Le Havre

For this eighth edition, Le Havre and the Paul Vatine Dock will once again be the centre of the event for a week of celebrations before the start - which as traditionally is separated in two for the monohulls and multihulls on 3rd and 4th November.

Salvador de Bahia

For the competitors, there is no major change: the Transat Jacques Vabre is still a two-handed race and the pairs of sailors are formed and come together according to their complementary skills, what they have in common and how they get on... but this year for the fleet there is a change, because joining the line-up will be the promising Class40 boats, which are attracting more and more sailors.

Destination Bahia! No more Ascension Island stopovers, as all the fleets will now face 4335 miles heading straight for Brazil, the archetypal coffee-growing land...

The major principles behind the race

A strong organisation

A race organised by Pen Duick, in collaboration with the city of Le Havre for the start, and the CENAB (Bahia Yachting Club) and the city of Salvador de Bahia for the finish.
In conjunction with the UNCL (the French Ocean Racing Union), the Upper Normandy Sailing League and the Le Havre sailing clubs.

A two-handed race

A single course: Le Havre - Salvador de Bahia / Brazil (4335 miles)

  • Starting line: off Le Havre
  • Finishing line: off Salvador de Bahia (Brazil)

5 Classes of boat

This event is open to multihulls and monohulls from the following classes: ORMA, IMOCA, Class 2 Monohulls, Open 50 Class and Class40.

The start:

  • Saturday 3rd November 2007 at 1 p.m.: Start for the monohulls
  • Sunday 4th November 2007 at 1 p.m.: Start for the multihulls

Single rankings for each class

Real-time rankings for each class will be established based on arrival time within the time limit.

A compulsory qualifying passage

Each boat with the crew that has entered will have to cover a qualifying passage, the details of which (course, length, date and time of start) will be drawn up with the Race Committee before the 1st October 2007, unless special dispensation is granted.

Boat checks at the start and finish

  • In Le Havre: Each boat will be inspected
  • In Salvador de Bahia: the Race Committee may take the decision to carry out spot checks on the boats, either following a request from the organising authority or from the International Jury.

Outside help allowed

All kind of navigational aids are allowed in particular for routing, except for the Class40 boats (as this is forbidden in their own rules).
