Sustainable Development

Rainforest Alliance, our NGO collaborator*

Rainforest Alliance is ainternational non governmental organization with which Jacques Vabre has worked for several years. The Rainforest Alliance has verified the forest replanting projects in Bahia, and the Bahia Mission.

What is the Rainforest Alliance?

  • An independent, international NGOthat was founded in 1987
  • A member of the Sustainable Agriculture Network, which has developed detailed and rigorous standards for growing coffee, tea, bananas, cocoa and many other tropical crops on small farms and large plantations in more than 30 countries.
  • Works to encourage better on-the-ground forestry practices by rewarding businesses, communities and governments that meet standards for sustainability.
  • With the launch of the SmartWood program in 1989, pioneered forestry certification on a global scale and was one of the founders of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

Key figures about Rainforest Alliance:

  • Work in 70 countries
  • Works with 154,000 coffee producers, farm labourers and their families, supported by an independent, third-party process
  • 15% of the global banana market and 2% of the global coffee market are Rainforest Alliance CertifiedTM farms certified.

Why is JV joining up with Rainforest Alliance?

By selecting some of its coffee beans from Rainforest Alliance CertifiedTM farms, Jacques Vabre can be sure that:

1 - These coffee beans are grown on farms where wildlife, soils and waterways are protected José Luis Diaz, employee of the Aquiares Farm in Costa Rica:

"The Rainforest Alliance certification process encouraged us to plant more than 2500 trees of ten different species. Thanks to that, we can see more birds and we can once again find animals that it was difficult to spot beforehand: racoons, coatis, … ".

2 - Farmers and workers are better trained and their economic situation often improves

In Aquiares, Costa Rica, the bonus paid by Jacques Vabre** to buy coffee beans from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms Rainforest Alliance supports a programme allowing workers to become home-owners.

3 - Living conditions (access to medical care, education,…) are improved for workers and their families

In Carrizal, Peru, the bonus paid by Jacques Vabre to buy coffee beans from certified farms funded construction of has enabled a secondary schoolin the community, so students no longer had to travel for 40 minutes to reach a neighbouring school.

Meteo

Meteo from Sunday 22nd Sunday 22: A relatively stationary storm low pressure trough over the Gulf of Panama produces Easterly winds of 25 to 30 knots off the Columbian Coast whereas the winds are a little more stable in the east out towards the West Indies, closer to 15-20 knots. The two leaders will have to pass to the north of the depression to keep their speed, sailing more miles but that should enable them to keep their speeds up and avoid the softer winds on the southern route. For those approaching the West Indies the trade winds remain at about 15-20 knots; they will need to make a longer starboard tack to make a long, more southerly course across the Caribbean.
