Sustainable Development

Rainforest Alliance, our NGO partnair *

Rainforest Alliance is an NGO with which Jacques Vabre has worked for several years. During the Transat Jacques Vabre, Rainforest Alliance is playing a major role in the forest replanting projects in Bahia,, and the Bahia Mission.

What is the Rainforest Alliance?

  • An independent NGO*, which is internationally recognised and has been operating on the ground since 1987
  • Checking the application of the principles of sustainable development according to 10 key standards, detailed in 200 criteria
  • For a range of products: coffee, wood, bananas, cocoa, flowers…
  • On all types of farm from small to large plantations

Key figures about Rainforest Alliance:

  • Present in 58 countries
  • 154,000 individual coffee producers, farm labourers and their families, supported by a certification process on coffee farms
  • 15% of the global banana market and 2% of the global coffee market are farms certified by the RA.

Why is JV joining up with Rainforest Alliance?

By selecting some of its coffee beans from farms certified by Rainforest Alliance, Jacques Vabre can be sure that:

1 - These coffee beans are grown in a better protected environment

José Luis Diaz, employee of the Aquiares Farm in Costa Rica:
"The Rainforest Alliance certification process encouraged us to plant more than 2500 trees of ten different species. Thanks to that, we can see more birds and we can once again find animals that it was difficult to spot beforehand: racoons, coatis, … ".

2 - Farmers are better trained and their economic situation improves

In Aquiares, Costa Rica, the bonus paid by Jacques Vabre** to buy coffee beans from farms certified by Rainforest Alliance supports a programme allowing farmers to become home-owners.

3 - Living conditions (access to medical care, education,…) are improved for local communities

In Carrizal, Peru, the bonus paid by Jacques Vabre to buy coffee beans from farms certified by Rainforest Alliance has enabled a secondary school to be built in the town, while up until now the pupils had to travel for 40 minutes to reach a neighbouring school.
